I feel like the reason Mrs. Mallard died at the end, is because of that devastating shock of terror. At first, she gets news that her husband died. She Is devastated, she feels sad.
But when she eventually sits on the chair, and looks outside. The moment that she realizes that it actually isn’t bad.
She is free. The pure joy she feels from that is enormous. She says: “free, body, soul, free!”
which indicates that she feels loose from that man’s grip.
But then, when you hear a knocking on a door, and you see that man… which you thought you were finally gone from. Open that door? She has a heart disease too, can you imagine the shock? I certainly can’t
That’s why I think she died of pure shock and enragement of that Mr. Mallard opening the door..
If I can’t be free alive, I will be free in the afterlife.

First off all women didn’t have many rights back then. that’s why many husbands were boss in the house, and chose all the things. the women only stayed at home cooked and didn’t really did exciting things. She also got abused by her husband so she is free now. Maybe she would’ve been with a way better man if she never met this man. Back then women didn’t have rights like nowadays they couldn’t word if they had a man, they couldn’t vote, the men were always the boss in the house and women didn’t really had a saying. So summarized I think she was filled with joy and already thought about a happy future with a nice drink on the beach. No abusive behavior by her husband anymore and just a happy life for herself.

Discuss the effect of foreshadowing in The Story of an Hour. How does the author foreshadow the ending and why is this important?
The ending is foreshadowed in the first sentence of the story. The first sentence of the story is ‘’knowing that Mrs. Mallard was afflicted with a heart trouble, great care was taken to break to her as gently as possible the news of her husband’s death’’ and eventually that is exactly how she passes away. If she did not have a heart disease she would not have passed away. She had passed away of heart disease after seeing her husband walking through the door and realizing he was not dead. Most people would think she would be happy if her husband walked through the door and was not dead, but Mrs. Mallard was happy he died because her husband was a very bad guy so when she realized he was alive she was so shocked she passed away. So that is why the ending is foreshadowed in the first sentence of the story.

  4. Nikola Celan – Why do you think Mrs. Mallard feels joy when she thinks about her husband’s death?

I strongly believe that Mrs. Mallard was striked by emotions when she heard about her husband’s death. She was angry, sad, but also joyful at the same time. I think that the main reason of these emotions come from her past with her husband. In the story she repeatedly mentioned ‘’free’’, which problaby relates to her now given freedom after her husband’s death. If her husband had treated her better, she wouldn’t have been so joyful about it. In history it was very common for husband’s mistreating their wives since the beginning of civilisation. If we take this all into account, we realise why Mrs. Mallard felt all those emotions. All those heavy emotions added up with the shock of her husband being alive, might’ve have been a reason of her own death.

I believe that Mrs. Mallard died because she was so happy that her husband was dead and she could finally be free, but when she sees her husband healthy and alive I think she might have been to shocked and had a heart attack or something like that.
At the start of the story there is said that Mrs. Mallard was afflicted with a heart trouble, this can increase the chances of getting a heart attack so that also may increase the chance of her dying because of a heart attack. She could’ve also died because of how happy she was, she could’ve been very shocked. So shocked that she might’ve died.
In the end of the story you can read that the doctors said that she had died of a heart disease of the joy that kills. this is what I said in the previous paragraphs.
And this is why I believe that Mrs., Mallard died because she was so happy that she was finally free, and when she saw him she might have been so shocked she died of a heart attack.

Why does she die at the end?
Well I think it is the shock of seeing someone who you though had died and where kind of celebrating his death enter you house is the reason she died . maybe if she had been sad she would have survived . she would be less shocked and more relieved and joyful her husband did make it home. Or if he had actually died she would have lived a free life , free from her husband but instead he made it home and that shock made her go into cardiac arrest and this is why she died in my eyes . getting that taste of freedom and before you are actually free that getting ripped away from you I so she could not live without that freedom so she got it back in the after life and this is how I think she died.

  10. In Kate Chopin’s story “The Story of an Hour” the ending is ironic. The story revolves around a housewife named Mrs. Mallard. She finds out that her husband died in an accident. Initially she is filled with grief and sadness. But then she realizes, if her husband did not die, she would still have to face his abuse, she feels liberated and a sense of freedom. She sees the rest of her life filled with opportunities and independence. However, when her husband returns home alive this leads to her sudden death. The doctors said that she died of “the joy that kills”.This is ironic since she was not happy to see her husband, but rather felt disappointed now that she wouldn’t be free. If Mr. Mallard didn’t die, Mrs. Mallard would be mistreated by her husband for many more years. This story shows how unpredictable life is and how what we think will make us happy might not always happen.

    6. Why does Mrs. Mallard die at the end of the story?

First of all I think she died because of the shock she got after she saw her husband.
She was happy when she was upstairs you can see this with the quote`` free, free, free`` and noting was going that could make her die except for her heart disease. Until she came down stairs and she died because of the shock she had when she saw her man.
We know that she had a heart disease that makes things a lot more clear. In some cases people die after they got a big shock so it would not be weird if this happened. Imagine if you heard that your husband died and than after an hour he walks in that would have an immense impact on you.
So the reason that she dies is most likely the shock.

After reading the story the first thing that came to mind is that it was very feminist. It was just like that time was in reality, because all women almost didn’t have any rights. The part of the story that represents it is that Mrs. Mallard was happy that her husband died because she was abused so many times by him. That is also why she whispered ‘free free free’ which represents her happiness. If Mrs. Mallard her husband really had died, would she still have had the same feeling after a longer period of time? if you read further you notice that the death of her husband actually didn’t happen, but that the news made a huge mistake by reporting a fake death. At the end of the story she also died because she was so In shock that her husband made a comeback. That’s why I think this story is very feminist because you can see how happy she was that her husband died, but you also see that she was very shocked when her husband came in.

The writer of the story, Kate Chopin makes the story very unclear at the beginning. She said that Mrs. Mallard loved her husband, but she is not happy, and this are not her true feelings. At the end of the story Mrs. Mallard even died because of her true feelings and her heart disease. Mrs. Mallard has a weak heart. The news that her husband died did not cause her death. It was the moment that she sees her husband alive is what kills her. If she had a stronger heart she would not die. In the story the doctor said that she died from her heart disease and of happiness. The doctor is not wrong because she was so happy about her husband death. But she died from seeing her husband alive and that she is not free anymore. If Mrs. Mallard did not die, she would be unhappy her entire life. And even though she died she is now free in the afterlife.

Why was Mrs Mallard happy about her husbands death? In history women didn’t have freedom, they were their husbands property and nothing more. Husband would also regularly mistreat their wives and that would be accepted by everyone. Women couldn’t choose anything for themselves their husbands would make all choices for them. So it would be very logical for Mrs Mallard to be glad about her husbands death. She would finally be able to make decisions for herself and just be free in general. She would be able to finally express her feelings and emotions. And she didn’t have to worry about her husband getting mad or abusing her in some way. So its great that she finally got her freedom. But all of this was ofcourse also very overwhelming for her, and it was just to much and that’s why she died.

This is a form of feminist protest because she was freed from her husband.
If she didn’t die from a heart attack, she would still live with her husband.
It is a link to that woman are caged when they get married.
They basically say that you should stand up to your husband.
This is a form of protest.
Would you be happy, if after a lot of years you be free.
      I would!
You are finally free. You see that when she is amazed by what she sees. Outside her window she sees a lot of stuff. Like the sun through the clouds, that represent something like the grass is greener on there other side.

    5. Why do you think Mrs. Mallard feels joy when she thinks about her husband's death?
I think the reason for her happiness is freedom. She felt free from him. Because women back in the days didn’t have as many rights as they have today. They were very dependent on their husbands, because of this a lot of women felt like a bird in a cage. So if their husbands died, it meant that they were finally free. If she was happy when she knew her husband was alive she would not be this happy when she thought he had passed away. That’s why she is happy when thinks about her husband’ death.

  16. “She had died from a heart disease-of a joy that kills” is ironic I several ways.

If the doctors had come and found Mrs. Mallard alive, they would have probably blamed her death on the heart disease caused by grief. But actually it is was the overwhelming joy of freedom that took her life!

The bitterness of traditional expectations and norms surrounding marriage proves that the marriage of Mrs. Mallard only robbed her of joy and happiness. When she found her freedom it became so exciting that it became dangerous to her heart. If doctors had known the real reason, they would have realized that her passing was a result of true happiness.

This ironic statement makes us question the common ideas about marriage and the impact it can have one someone’s life. Marriage is not for every man or woman which includes Mrs. Mallard. Some might only realize it after they have found their freedom.
